The iPhone Obsession

With the new release of the iPhone 6, iPhone fanatics are even more prominent right now. My roommate keeps telling me all of the “great” aspects of the new iPhone. Many of these new upgrades are things my phone has been able to do for years. My Facebook news feed is filled with posts, pictures and videos of people getting the iPhone 6 and articles about how great it is. I have friends who watch Apple release dates like it’s a due date for a future child. To many it is their future child and that is a scary thought. This obsession with Apple devices, iPhones in particular, is a very scary thought.
You do not see this type of obsession and excitement with other types of phones. When Android phones and Windows phones come out you don’t see lines at stores waiting to get the newest phone and there is certainly no crazy backorder on the phones. This obsession is worldwide too. Around the world people camp outside of Apple stores for days to be some of the first people to get the new phone. In Australia a news source was filming the purchaser of the first iPhone 6 and the person dropped the phone on the ground as soon as it was opened. This film made news worldwide and became a point of topic for many people.
Personally, this is a very crazy thought to me. Watching people making such a big deal over a piece of technology is very upsetting to me. While my phone is very important to me I cannot understand how someone would be willing to wait in long lines and pay large amounts of money for something that will be a piece of trash in a few years when there are other options out there. Being a former iPhone user I was very excited to be able to move on to a different type of phone.

One amazing thing that happens with the release of the new phone is how old iPhones, that had been t The Thing to have back in the day, become garbage and of no interest to almost all people. This shows how technology is temporary and how quickly this world now moves through material items. Years ago phones would last for many years, whereas now people are getting new phones after a year or less many times. Having an upgrade is the equivalent to Christmas for many who do not even have anything wrong with their current phone. Companies compete with each other to have the Biggest and Best to draw people in to scrapping their old phones for their “better” one. This not only applies to phones but is very clear with iPhone users. With the release of each new iPhone little is changed-especially considering many other phones out there have the same updates already-the obsession grows even more over the smallest change. The release of the iPhone 6 has brought light again to the fanaticism and desire to have the new best thing and the obsession of many iPhone users.
