Meet Jibo

Meet Jibo, the "world's first family robot". He is a stationary robot that boasts the ability to take pictures for you (so no one is left out of the picture), handle your schedule, singing, dancing and read your messages and notify of who has contacted you. He is an entertainer and an educator having the ability to read stories to your children. He can also stream video to his screen allowing someone who isn't present the ability to be apart of the room. He can also connect to your home and order food for you and inform you of voice mails. He also provides any user to create their own applications and upload them into Jibo.

After looking into Jibo I had one major concern that was shared even with people who worked on the project. Jibo seems to be a replacement for human interaction. While text messages may not be the most human way of communication, we now have Jibo text for us. Instead of teaching your kids life lessons, Jibo will read to your child and educate it. Jibo almost seems like a replacement for a Nanny but without the human touch.

Even with these concerns though, it can not be denied how much of an accomplishment Jibo is. His interactive nature and seemingly playfulness makes Jibo seem less like a robot and more like a part of the family. He is a reminder and a helper and, even when necessary, a babysitter who you could check in on your kids yourself through. While still in it's early stages it is easy to tell how helpful and beneficial Jibo will be.
