Governor
Chris Christie stopped by Stevens today, and gave a bit of a speech about the
importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers
such as those that we prepare for here. He touched on the vast amount of STEM
jobs that need to be filled in New Jersey alone (200k+ in the next 5 years)
just to maintain our current position. Being a student in such a field, it is
good to hear it reiterated that there are jobs out there after graduation that
will make a difference, jobs that truly are necessary.
The
focus on STEM jobs demonstrates the importance that technology fields hold for
society in modern times. These fast-growing fields sustain their growth because
of the demand for more workers who can keep up with the ever changing world of
technology. All businesses need to use some form of current technology to
succeed. Even the most non-tech related companies should maintain a presence on
the internet, where many customers search for services, and many more companies
actively engage with their customers through online social networking and media.
What this means for those pursuing a career in STEM fields is access to almost
any type of company out there. These majors are needed everywhere, perhaps not
as the main focus of the business, but to keep the business competitive in a
technology-driven world. The choices available for workers who can fill this
demand, especially those in computer-related majors, cannot be rivaled by any
other discipline.
What
this means to me is that it is a good time to be pursuing a computer science
degree. It is a good feeling to know that there will be opportunities out there
when it is time to go out into the world and begin a full time career, and that
these opportunities are in positions that will truly make a difference. The
fact that these technology fields are growing is an assurance that the world is
embracing the new opportunities that they present, and adopting innovation and
growth into standard operating procedure. Technology affects every aspect of
our lives, and to be part of that movement toward ever higher heights is a
privilege.
