Generation "like"; more like generation deperate

Social media these days has allowed for unparalleled levels of communication. People can now follow all their friends, see what they are up to an share photos of their breakfast with everyone. They can also "like" each others posts and photos. Status updates can be shared and tweets can be re-tweeted.  All this is making people desperate for recognition and attention.
Face it, people get exited when their photo or post gets a lot of likes and comments. It feel empowering when this happens. And that is dangerous. We are constantly becoming dependent on others liking us in order to feel satisfied. I mean seriously, why would you post a picture of your food! NOBODY CARES! There is no reason to post stuff like that other than to get "likes" and fulfill our desire to be recognized by people who you really don't know. This is a huge problem. We need to stop judging our self worth based on how many people share or like our stuff on social media. This desperate behavior is time consuming and extremely distracting. It also leads to people showing off, as you can see when people post about going to the gym. I personally believe that showing off is extremely pathetic and vile. Social media needs to be used properly. To communicate with others about stuff that matters, not what your cat did. This behavior will decrease the intellectual capacity of the country as people will have less and less meaningful conversations and instead focus on B.S like breakfast photos and checking in at Mcdonalds. No wonder most graduate students are foreign born, we are just getting too stupid to do complex stuff, and this is a big reason why.
