Countermovements

Newton's Third Law of Motion states that for every reaction, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The same is true of society.

It's as close to a universal law as possible. Every time someone voices their opinion, in public or in private, they can be assured that someone somewhere disagrees completely.

It's not a ground-breaking concept. In sociology, the theory of the 'countermovement' is an old one. The gist of it is this; any social movement, by existing, will create a movement of people who believe the exact and complete opposite. This is true for even the most reasonable ideas. Despite the fact that any sane person will tell you that cannibalism is wrong, and in fact because of this, there is some group of people that will tell you instead that cannibalism is the right and true way for all peoples to follow.

One need not go far to find actual examples in society.

The reason countermovements exist can be explained easily. For something to be opposed, it must exist; and there are always people looking to oppose new and exciting things. Contributing to this even further, there is the fact that when one assigns a name to a group of beliefs, people who honestly hold the exact opposite set of convictions will then assign a name to themselves. Thus countermovements are born. equal parts contrarians and true believers.

Take for example the Tea Party. There was no organized opposition to the exact set of beliefs that people who would join the Tea Party had. Today, those people have a website.
