Why do people make viruses?

I have been interested in computers for my entire life. Since the first time I learned what a virus was I always questioned why people would want to damage someone else's computer. Even after learning more about viruses and what they do I still ask the same question. Computer's became popular very quickly once the internet began and had no down sides to it. Why did people have to go ruin it by finding ways to harm others via the web.

Even though computers make life easier for billions of people a day there is a group of people that aim to make their lives harder. Whether its by a virus that makes their computer unusable or a virus that steals their personal information people are harmed. It doesn't make sense to me how people can take a place with such freedoms and openness and try to damage it. They make more than just those they are attacking lives more difficult, they drive corporations crazy.

Every major corporation today has all of its data stored on computers or servers and every corporation faces the same problem, "how do we stop intruders?" The cyber security job market is booming because hacking major corporations to steal money, information, or cause harm, has become a major threat to society. Everyday their are new tools and techniques that the cyber security field is constantly adapting and improving their encryption and security techniques.

This should not even be an issue with the internet but like everything else in history a small few have to ruin it for everyone. Viruses have caused major damages to peoples computers and even lives which has prompted governments to step in and set rules and regulations. Computers can't create and maintain a self-sustaining society because there will always be a group of people doing what they should not be doing. The internet must be regulated or else the attackers will make the rules.

  1. Well, I feel like when you think of what is going on real life, that's kind of same way. I mean, people will do anything (at least most of things) for money and benefits; similarly, people make virus either to make other computers "zombie bots" that will help them, or to damage other people's computer for their own benefits.

I really don't agree with that statement. When attackers find exploits in programs, it is no different than a robber finding an unlocked door in someone's home. People still have unlocked doors, and cheap locks on their homes.

Just because there are bad people, does not mean we need the government to regulate the Internet. What we need is more and more research into cybersecurity and computer science. If that can't be done, the next best thing is to not put sensitive files onto computers.

  3. Most viruses are made to try to steal something from another person's computer. Independent computer owners already have a lot of tools in their arsenal to protect themselves against them. An anti-virus software works really well and many people have some form of protection. The only thing that people can do better is not fall for phishing attempts.

The protections against viruses available to individual citizens already makes it difficult enough for viruses to get in. The government shouldn't regulate the internet for protection against viruses because it would cause problems for innocent people and would not stop enough viruses to justify the costs.

Sorry but no they don't work even if I use a well known public software to make it (metasploit) out of 47 different anti-virus software only 3 detect that it is a virus.
