Kansas to ban use of welfare on tattoos, cruises, psychics

"Kansas is poised to put a stop to the practice of welfare recipients using government aid to pay for psychics with a bill that cracks down on the use of welfare for fun."

Well thank you very much Sen. O'Donnell. Why in the world should the tax dollar go towards welfare recipients tattoos and psychic visits? The idea is rather sickening. The purpose of welfare is to temporarily assist individuals in a time of need, in hopes that they will eventually be able to support themselves. That being said, these funds should be strictly used on essential things such as food, rent, and supplies. When a public assistance system is set in place, there needs to be regulations like this in order to prevent abuse and wasteful spending. On top of these spending limitations, there will also be a cash withdrawal limit of $25.00 a day. This is to ensure that individuals are not using funds in inappropriate areas.

"Democrats say the bill is unnecessarily discriminatory and, intentionally or not, will have the effect of exacerbating stigmas against the needy."

How is that so? This system is simply protecting the tax payers hard earned money by ensuring these funds are used wisely. Tattoos and cruises are not of utmost importance if the financial backing is not there. I typically am rather open minded when it comes to public assistance, but when we do redistribute wealth, proper precautions need to be set in place.

  2. I am very much in agreement with your closing statement. People need welfare money and I accept that and support it so that hopefully they can find themselves back on their feet. That being said, this system definitely has to be regulated. The money that is given for assistance should not be used on luxuries like cruises and tattoos; it needs to be used for food and rent, like you said. Before reading this post, I didn't know someone could use welfare money for tattoos and psychic visits. That is bizarre! How is that helping them feed their family, keep a roof over their heads, or find a job? Props to Senator O'Donnell, but shame for it taking this long. Also shame on those saying that this is "unnecessarily discriminatory." Grow up.

  3. When I first read the title of this, I was pretty shocked. I had no clue that Welfare could even be used for items such as that, I thought it was for strictly the necessities. Having said that, I couldn't agree with this proposal more. I don't see how Welfare is assisting people when they are going out and spending it on goods and services that they don't need. Some people say Welfare doesn't give them enough money but when you look at it, even a small tattoo costs around $50, which is $50 more dollars someone should be spending on food. After reading this post I definitely think the system is good for aiding people, just flawed currently.
