Home is where the Groups of People You Share Weird Interests with is

The internet has matured to an unarguably more human network since its primary purpose as a means of military communication and other military practices. It has evolved to mesh practical use like, information exchange and self-diagnoses off Mayo Clinic, to a means of accessing pure gratification, Pornography and video games. Somewhere in-between the then and now, people discovered that there are others out there with the same strange interest as themselves. Small and large interconnected networks have formed spreading across far reaches, and even the unreachable, parts of the internet. These groups, for better or worse, spawn new ideas and constantly alter our belief-systems that were previously unobtainable without the creation and use of the modern forum we call the internet.

The internet is great for forming relationships with other we would never meet because of distance or sparsity of interest. For some of us, there are people who experience pleasurable sensations when presented with something they see, hear, smell, touch, or taste. Certain thoughts can also provoke this sensation. There is little to none scientific evidence supporting this phenomenon. However, many groups have formed with people who share this pleasurable response to certain stimuli. A term has even been coined for it called, autonomous sensory meridian response. Without the internet, people who experience this phenomenon would find it unquestionably difficult for others to find others like them,

We must also amend our belief-systems to compensate for new issues that arise from the internet. Kevin Bollaert is a twenty-eight year old web developer who founded a website where people can submit naked pictures of their ex with their ex’s personal information and links to their social media profiles. Bollaert used a second site that allowed people to pay to have their nude photos and information taken down for $350 a person. Revenge Porn. His sites were taken down a year after their creation. Maliciousness over the internet has completely revolutionized the way we access information and share our personal lives over the internet. New considerations in morality and ethics have risen because of how we behave on the internet.

Being able to Google anything and find ourselves to this open world of niches, perhaps makes us more tolerant and accepting toward one another. As the internet matures we must also evaluate our moral grounds and the rules of conduct governing them. It opens us up to each other, to the realization that everyone is imperfect and emotional with their quirky, strange interests in some way.

  1. I agree. In particular, sites like Reddit are fantastic for this sort of thing. It's now easy to find groups of people that specialize, or are otherwise interested in, the exact same things you're interested in. Participating in these groups helps everyone involved grow and mature, and helps them improve at whatever they're interested in. It's probably one of my favorite things about the Internet as a whole.
